The Cabinet has approved the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 with an aim to make "India a global knowledge superpower" introducing several changes in the Indian education system - from the school to college level.FEATURES:1. One of the salient features of the new education policy is replacing the 10+2 structure of school curriculum with a 5+3+3+4 curriculum structure corresponding to age groups 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years respectively.2. All higher education institutions, except legal and medical colleges, to be governed by a single regulator.3. Common norms to be in place for private and public higher education institutions.4. MPhil courses to be discontinued.5. Board exams to be based on knowledge application.6. Home language, mother tongue or regional language to be medium of instruction up to class 5. 7. Common entrance exams to be held for admission to universities and higher education institutions.8. School curriculum to be reduced to core concepts; integration of vocational education from class 6.PRINCIPLES:• Flexibility•No hard separations between subjects, curricular and extra-curricular activities• Multi-disciplinary education• Conceptual understanding• Critical thinking• Ethical Values• Teachers as the heart of the learning process• The strong public education systemMERITS:• Comprehensive: NEP seeks to address the entire gamut of education from preschool to doctoral studies, and from professional degrees to vocational training.• Early Childhood Education : In adopting a 5+3+3+4 model for school education starting at age 3, the New education Policy recognizes the primacy of the formative years from ages 3 to 8 in shaping the child's future. • Easy on Regulations : NEP 2020 makes a bold prescription to free our schools, colleges and universities from periodic "inspections" and place them on the path of self-assessment and voluntary declaration.• Holistic : The policy, inter alia, aims to eliminate problems of pedagogy, structural inequities, access asymmetries and rampant commercialization.• Promote Inclusion: The Policy proposes the creation of 'inclusion funds' to help socially and educationally disadvantaged children pursue education. NEP is moving away from the conventional content towards holistic learning. It gives focuses equally on other subjects such as humanities, sports, fitness, languages, culture, arts, etc. apart from Science, Mathematics, etc.
Its a switch from 10+2 education structure to 5+3+3+4 education system.Students will spend 5 years in elementary school, three years in middle school , three years in high school and four years in college.Foundational Stage: This is subdivided into two parts-
a) 3 years of pre- school follow by classes 1 and 2 in primary school.
b) 3- 8 years - focus will be on activity based learning.Preparatory Stage:* Classes 3-5 cover ages 8-10 years - Gradually introduce subjects i.e speaking, reading, writing, physical education ,art , science and mathematics.
Middle Stage: * Classes 6-8 covering ages 11-13 years - Introduce more abstract concepts in subjects of mathematics, science, social science , humanities and Art.Secondary Stage: * Classes 9-12 covering the ages of 14- 18 years subdivided into two parts :
9 and 10 in first phase and 11 and 12 in second phase - aim is to inculcate multidisciplinary study, coupled with critical thinking , multiple subjects option will be provided.

NEP is touching all the corners of today's learning world. It is working on practical knowledge and over all development of the students.
NEP is new education policy which was framed and proposed by CBSE under education ministry in 2020. it is mainly based on teaching and learning through practical based activities and integrated approach.
A new pedagogical framework that divides children's education into four stages was proposed by the NEP 2020. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is getting ready to switch to the 5+3+3+4 pedagogical system, as recommended by the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The draft of NEP is based on the foundational pillars access, affordability, equity, quality and accountability.Good blend of academics with vocational training. More emphasis in learning by doing. Though it is a good approach, but can be a challenge to implement various mix match stream subjects.
